Ulrike Müller in the 2019 Venice Biennale
Central Pavilion Arsenale
May 11 - November 24, 2019
"Ulrike Müller works with various materials and techniques - including enamel painting, prints and weaving- to explore questions of image-making, feminism, and body and identity politics. Deploying a graphic and rigorous formalism, she creates meticulous surfaces that invite intimate looking. In early 2018, Müller began working with master printer Marina Ancona on a series of monotypes, and found in this process a new way to discover how much information might be needed to make an image. She experimented with the convergence of scribbled gestures and geometric stencils to produce plant-like, petalled shapes generated by a chain of associations and visual conversation with Henri Matisse’s Jazz cutouts, Tove Jansson and children’s book illustrations.”
